Brief

Where California Fly Fisher started.

A new fly-fishing magazine for California, built from a standing start. We were brought in to lay the SEO foundation and the WordPress site that would carry it. From zero traffic, zero subscriptions, and an empty domain, we built the structure, the taxonomy, and the custom plugins the publication needed to grow month after month.

  • Zero organic traffic and zero subscriptions at the start.
  • A WordPress site that needed structure built for SEO from day one.
  • Custom plugin work to support the editorial model.
Timeline

The journey.

  1. Jul 2024
    Foundations

SEO strategy and a WordPress site, from scratch

We started in July 2024 with an empty domain and no traffic. The first phase was foundational: keyword research, site architecture, taxonomies, and the WordPress build itself. Custom plugins to match the editorial workflow. Meta and schema wired in at the site level, not bolted on as a layer.

  2. Oct 2024
    Early signal

60.8% organic traffic growth in the first three months

Three months in, organic traffic was up 60.8%, organic new users up 51.3%, and form submissions up over 23%. Two hundred new keywords ranking in a single month. The foundation was holding.

  3. 2025
    Compounding

Monthly traffic climbing, keyword footprint expanding

Through 2025 the work shifted from foundations to compounding. Editorial published against a long-form SEO plan. Internal linking matured. The keyword footprint widened across destinations, techniques, gear, and conservation topics that fly-fishing readers actually search for.

  4. Apr 2026
    Where we are

6.3K monthly organic users. 600+ subscriptions a month

April 2026 closed at 6.3K monthly organic users and over 600 monthly subscriptions. The magazine that started at zero is now growing every month, with SEO carrying the bulk of acquisition. Engagement ongoing.

Approach

Three pillars, running together.

SEO strategy, site structure, and a WordPress build tuned for the way fly-fishing readers actually search. Each pillar reinforces the next.

01

SEO strategy

Keyword research, content priorities, internal linking, and the long-form plan the editorial team builds against. Structured for compounding, not for a quick win.

Deliverables

Keyword strategy · Site architecture · Internal linking · Schema markup

02

Site structure

Information architecture and taxonomy designed for the way fly-fishing readers search. URL structure, categories, tags, and the relationships that let Google understand what the magazine covers.

Deliverables

Information architecture · Taxonomies · Meta tags · URL structure

03

Custom WordPress plugins

The off-the-shelf plugins did not match the editorial workflow. We built our own. Subscription handling, editorial blocks, and performance hardening, all bespoke.
